So, you are ready to start a new chapter in your life and add a child into your family. Before you get started, here are a few things you should know when you are trying to get pregnant.
Doctor Checkup. Meet with your doctor. Get some blood tests done. Make sure everything looks good and that there isn’t anything that would cause you not to get pregnant. Figure out your BMI (body mass index). Women should have a BMI between 20 and 30. Those outside of this range have a harder time getting pregnant.
Folic Acid. Make sure that you are taking a pre-natal vitamin that contains folic acid. This is important because it reduces the risk of birth defects. Try to start taking these a few months before you start trying to get pregnant. Also, it is important that the man is also getting enough folic acid in his diet. Studies have shown that men with lower levels of folic acid were found to have abnormalities in their sperm.
Smoking, Drinking and Drugs. Stop these habits now! Not only do they reduce your chance of getting pregnant, they can cause miscarriages, premature babies, and low birth weight babies. Do not wait until you find out you are pregnant to stop. Affects on the baby will have already taken place. Even second hand smoke can affect your chances of getting pregnant.
Caffeine. Cut back on caffeine. Try to limit yourself to a cup a day. Both men and women need to be careful of their caffeine consumption. Too much caffeine can cause your body not to absorb the iron needed for a healthy baby. Avoid coffee, tea and caffeinated soda.
Ovulation. Get to know your body. Use an ovulation kit to determine when you are ovulating. Make sure that you have sex before you ovulate. The egg can only live up to 24 hours but sperm can live up to 5 days. Keep monthly records of when you are ovulating. If you are somewhat regular, this will help you in predicting when you might ovulate.
Laptops. Make sure that the man is not using his laptop on his lap for long periods of time. The heat from the laptop can affect the sperm supply. So, keep the laptop on a desk or table to avoid a lower sperm count or quality of the sperm.
Sex. Make sure you are having sex at least 3 times a week. Start a week before predicted time of ovulation and have sex every other day up until you ovulate. Don’t use any lubricants. They can slow down or damage the sperm. Saliva can also damage sperm. Missionary style is one of the most affective positions to get the sperm closest to the cervix and stay inside your body. After intercourse, you can elevate your hips by putting a pillow underneath you. Stay in this position for 15 minutes.
